Album of the Week: Bone Machine by Tom Waits
I was introduced to singer/song writer Tom Waits awhile ago, by my English teacher. When first hearing Waits, I didn’t really like it. I found it to be too aggressive, and it was a style I wasn’t accustom to. With time, my love for his music grew, and I now listen to Tom Waits, like I would Bloc Party or Metric.
The thing that I love about Tom Waits, is how experimental he is. He’s not afraid to play and say what he wants. In fact, he once attached a bass string to a dumpster, just to see what kind of sound it would make. He’s an artists who plays around and plays with tons of different sounds and styles, which I find very admirable.
Blue and Experimental are the two best genres to use to describe his type of music. If you’re someone who turns on the radio, and listen to whatever’s on the top 10 billboards, then Tom Waits isn’t something I would recommend. He’s more for the experimental and blues audience, who are looking for something they’ve never heard before.
I haven’t had a chance to listen to all of his albums (there are a lot of them), but I’ve listened to Bone Machine closely, and I definitely enjoy it, which is why I chose this album to share with you guys this week. If you’ve never heard any of his songs, here are some Youtube links to some of his stuff. (The songs are from various albums)
• Coffee and Cigarettes
• God’s Away on Business
• I Don’t Want to Grow Up
• Lie to Me
• Cold Water

Now that is a good album, one I’ve been meaning to get for quite a while. I have some of his others on Vinyl, and they’re fantastic albums. I don’t have Bone Machine though…

Ya, I really enjoy this album. I have a bunch of his others, but haven’t really listened to them all that much.
